The word “Beltane” translated quite literally means “bright fire”. At its core, Beltane is a celebration of fertility and sexuality. It’s when the god and goddess reunite to conceive a bountiful new season full of blossoming fruit trees as the planting of the first crops commences in the fields. One of its best-known fertility rituals are the Maypole dancers who intertwine ribbons over and under as they spin around the pole in an act to symbolize the unification of the god and goddess and the weaving of a fertile future.
Beltane is considered the first summer festival and, perhaps even more well-known than the Maypole dancers, are the bonfires. Bonfires were traditionally lit as our ancestors were putting their herds out to pasture and were used to purify, protect, and cleanse them. The farmers themselves would then jump the fire to bring good fortune and an abundant harvest in the coming year.
Beltane is also associated with The Green Man and it is at this time where he is at the pinnacle of his power.
